  • Reflect on your teaching so far. Choose one area that you know you need to strengthen. Use this area to list 1-3 needs that might serve as objects for your PDP

What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Classroom Discipline
Students will be more orderly during the class period and will be able to be more attentive during instruction. This will help all students. There will be less background noise and everyone will be listening to me when I am talking. If they have misconceptions about the material we will be able to clear these up before they are assessed on the material.
The behavior change in my room would help to improve the behavior of the students throughout the school. If students throughout the school had higher behavior standards then there would be more order throughout the school where students are more responsible for their own learning and for their own behavior. With better behavior, students will perform better in each of there classes which could improve NECAP scores and other standardized results.

2.
Incorporation of more hands on activities
The students will enjoy the lessons more and will discover the concepts for themselves which will help them to more meaningfully learn the material.
Students will be more engaged in my classroom and this energy could spread to their other classes. They can realize that learning is fun and that learning can be rewarding for them in any subject area.
RIBTS 5
3.
Create effective assessments that accurately assess what was taught
Students will understand what the expectations of them are. They will be able to determine whether or not they truly understand the material and where more instruction may be necessary. If I stand by my assessments students will begin to take more responsibility for their learning.
Students will improve their understanding of concepts throughout my classroom which could help them to perform better on standardized tests. They may also learn better study habits that could help them throughout their other courses.

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
  • measurable/observable
  • should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
  • should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
  • linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.

In the space below describe you goal and plan in two paragraphs.

In the first paragraph, describe a rationale your professional development goal. This rationale should describe the goal, the personal need that it will address, and how this goal benefits your students and your perspective school.

I. Professional Development Goal

Within my first professional year as a high school educator I will create an effective classroom environment in which there are no regular classroom behavioral issues. I want to set clear expectations and enforce 100% of the rules that are set forth from the beginning of the school year.

My professional development goal is to development an effective and controlled classroom environment in which there are clear expectations for student behavior. I want my students to take responsibility for their behavior and to understand why it is important for them to properly behave within the walls of any classroom. I don't want students to be talking or doing other assignments when I am providing instruction to them. I want them to understand that respecting their peers and their teachers is an integral part of being successful in school.

If I can create this type of environment I feel as though I would be a much more effective teacher. Students would all be attentive during my lessons and therefore would be better prepared to understand the material that is being presented to them. In this way, I could engage the students and help them to develop study habits and skills that they can take with them to all of the other subject areas. By developing a controlled classroom environment I would also set the standards of student behavior at a high level. Therefore, when students leave my classroom they will understand what will be expected of them and know that they are responsible for their own behavior. If the school could create a consistent set of standards, the students would be more orderly during the entirety of the day and this would improve the school atmosphere and culture.

In order to achieve this goal I need to create clear expectations for my students from day 1 of the school year. I need to be adamant about sticking to these principles and discipline the students who show resistance. I want to learn new techniques for classroom discipline that would help me accomplish this. My personal development plan below will help me to reach this goal.

This professional development goal addresses RIBTS #6

Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.

II. Professional Development Plan

By the end of my first year of teaching I will work to achieve this goal and to become a more effective classroom disciplinarian. In order to do this I will engage in several forms of professional development.

First, I plan to find a mentor within the school that I am working at. I will observe this teacher on my free period and specifically analyze their disciplinary tricks and techniques. By observing experienced teachers I will be able to learn the "tricks of the trade", and can apply these strategies within my own classroom. I will try out these strategies and engage in self reflection in which I analyze the behavior of my students and construct alternatives in order to make improvements. I will definitely work closely with all of my colleagues in order to improve my own classroom management strategies.

Second, I will keep a personal journal specifically for this issue in which I document the strategies that I have tried and the consequences that followed. In order to improve as a teacher I need to try new things and determine for myself what works and what doesn't work. Every teacher needs to adopt a different discipline system that fits their personality and the way in which they are comfortable dealing with confrontations. I want to develop this discipline plan throughout my first year of teaching. A journal documenting what I have and have not tried will certainly help me to accomplish this

In addition to this, I will also attempt to attend several conferences that have workshops discussing class management. This will help me to learn the new innovative theories that professionals have regarding classroom management. I can certainly learn from these workshops.

Lastly, I will also attend a 3 credit night class on classroom management. By going back to school to learn about more classroom management skills I will be able to have a new arsenal of strategies that I can try within my classroom. I will continue to use my journal in order to eventually determine the most effective way for me to personally manage my classroom. Taking a class will also help me to meet new colleagues and discuss different strategies of classroom discipline with them.
